THE TRANSTHEORETICAL MODEL OF CHANGE

The Transtheoretical Model-TTM (also called the Stages of Change Model), developed by Prochaska and DiClemente in the late 1970s, focuses on the decision-making of the individual and is a model of intentional change. The TTM operates on the assumption that individuals do not change behaviors quickly and decisively. Rather, change in behavior, especially habitual behavior, occurs continuously through a cyclical process.

The TTM presents the model that individuals move through five stages of change: precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action and maintenance. For each stage of change, different intervention strategies are most effective at moving the individual to the next stage of change and subsequently through the model to maintenance, considered the ideal stage of behavior.

1. Precontemplation - In this stage, individuals do not intend to take action in the foreseeable future (defined as within the next 6 months). Being uninformed or under informed about the consequences of specific or multiple behavior/habit may cause an individual to be in the precontemplation stage. Unsuccessful attempts on modifying a behavior can lead to demoralization about the ability to change. The fact is that some programs were not designed to meet the needs for individuals in precontemplation. At WellBeing w/Coach Edna you will explore what are your existing desires and needs, and take a look at what possible steps you will be willing to take when ready. There is purpose and reason for this stage. At the right moment, you will be propelled by an inner impulse to contemplate the journey ahead to an empowered wellbeing. (Pathfinder Coaching Sessions)

2. Contemplation - In this stage, individuals are intending to start a modification of behavior or habit to create a healthier lifestyle in the foreseeable future (defined as within the next 6 months). Individuals recognize the need and/or desire for a change in behavior to more beneficial ones. In most instances, it comes with a thoughtful and practical consideration of the pros and cons of changing the behavior. When the pros and cons are equally balanced it can lead to ambivalence causing individuals to remain in this stage. At WellBeing w/ Coach Edna we honor this stage. Our powerful conversations infused with provocative questions will help you incline, one way or the other, on that decisional balance. Once you feel the weight of your desires, you will be ready to step in the preparation zone for your journey ahead to an empowered wellbeing. (Pathfinder Coaching Sessions)

3. Preparation (Determination) - In this stage, individuals are ready to take action within the next 30 days. The individuals start taking small steps toward the behavior/habit change, and they believe changing their behavior/habit can lead to a healthier life. At WellBeing w/Coach Edna we help you think about the building blocks that will make this journey a successful one. We help you look inside to identify your motivators and strengths. Also, we help you identify the strategies that have worked in the past for you that can serve you now to move forward into action. These are the very first steps into the journey to empower your wellbeing. (Habit Mastery Program)

4. Action - In this stage, individuals have recently started changing their behavior/habit (defined as within the last 6 months) and they intend to keep moving forward with that behavior/habit change. At WellBeing w/Coach Edna we celebrate this stage as it is one filled with excitement, learning, new discoveries provoked by new experiences and actions. Mistakes, errors, slip and falls are welcome because they are full of learning and information that allows you to correct the path direction to the empowered being you are becoming. (Habit Mastery Program)

5. Maintenance - In this stage, individuals have sustained their behavior/habit change for a while (defined as more than 6 months) and intend to maintain that behavior change going forward. The behavior is a habit now leading to a healthier lifestyle. Individuals in the maintenance stage are less tempted to relapse and are increasingly more confident that they can continue their changes. At WellBeing w/Coach Edna we celebrate this stage which is filled with increased self-confidence, self-awareness, and all the tools acquired during the action stage. The individual is ready to go on their own with the new habit. (Boost Coaching Session)

The complete experience of changing a behavior or habit leads to the discovery and remembrance of wisdom and potential you have within but it is/was dormant. Now, that new self is awakening, ready for more… More changes, more experiences, more learnings, more discoveries, more awareness, more knowing… until one day, you will not need to empower yourself anymore as you will be a Self Full of Power, self-power.

I invite you to envision that powerful self and walk the Journey to WellBeing w/Coach Edna.
